A human rights activist, Mr. Toyin Okanlawon, who is also a member of Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network (ACVPN), had demanded action on the rape of 19 years old girl, stressing that delay was dangerous.

According to Toyin, the survivor was raped by a 20 years old man, identified as Damola and the rape act was carried out in his residence at Boyle Street, Shomolu.

Toyin said: “The lady knew him as a neighbour in the community and casually greeted him occasionally but on a sad day, they both boarded a commercial bus together. When the lady alighted from the bus, the perpetrator went after her; he told her she should follow him to know where he left, alas’ on getting to the house he tore her panties and raped her. After the ugly incident, the perpetrator pleaded with her and gave her N2000, asking for forgiveness. He also begged her not to tell anyone, but the survivor rejected his money. He also attempted to seize her pant, which the lady didn’t allow. The perpetrator ran away from home for two days but was finally arrested by Onipanu Police personnel. As usual, consultations have been going on and pressure is being mounted on the lady to collect N50, 000 because she’s from a poor family. She stood firm against some focus-less elements and the parents of the perpetrator who want the case swept under carpet but the lady said she wanted justice by all means. The perpetrator to have been pleading that he didn’t want to go to jail. I hereby call on our amiable OC Gender of Police Command to please use her good office once again to call for this mentioned case to be transferred to the Gender office of the Police Command.”
