A Police Inspector, Nelson Abuante, attached to Rivers State Police Command has turned his service rifle on himself after he mistakenly shot and killed his colleague identified as Inspector Monday Gbaramana.

The incident, which took on the 17th of December, happened when the two Inspectors went to a Nyogor-Lueku Community in the State to effect the arrest of Mr Akpobari Akere, following a complaint lodged against him by his mother, Mrs Eunice Akere.

It was gathered that Akpobari had resisted arrest and a scuffle had ensured. It was in the middle of trying to arrest Akpobari at all costs that Nelson mistakenly shot Gbaramana, who later died on the way.

Many believed that Gbaramana would have survived and Nelson would not have taken his life if not for the car taking the injured man to hospital stopped on the road due to lack of fuel.

Securitynewsalert.com learned: “ On the 17th of December, at about 3:30 pm, Inspector Monday Gbaramana and Inspector Nelson Abuante, both of Taabaa Division went on investigation activities to Nyogor-Lueku Community to arrest one Akpobari Akere based on report made against him by his mother Eunice Akere.

“In the process of arresting the said Akpobari Aere, he resisted arrest and a scuffle ensued between him and the policemen.

“Inspector Nelson Abuante mistakenly shot Inspector Monday Gbaramana, who as a result sustained serious injury. Inspector Nelson and the complainant immediately put Inspector Monday inside the car to rush him to the hospital.

“However on the way to the hospital, the car conveying the injured policeman ran out of fuel.

“Inspector Monday gave up the ghost. Inspector Nelson, realising that his colleague had died, shot himself to death.  On information, the patrol team led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO)  immediately moved to the scene and recovered their arms into custody while the corpses of the two inspectors were deposited at Nyorum mortuary for autopsy.”
