Demolition Of Barracks In Lagos Without Alternative Housing, Demoralising -RULAAC

The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has urged the government to ensure an alternative housing option for residents before carrying out the demolition of barracks in Lagos State.

The Executive Director of RULAAC, Okechukwu Nwanguma said that the barracks demolition in Lagos State is a complex issue that affects the lives of many police officers and their families.

He added: “The government’s decision to rehabilitate dilapidated structures in the barracks may be well-intentioned, but it’s crucial to consider the potential consequences on the officers’ morale and the state’s security.

“Demolishing the barracks without providing adequate alternative housing options can indeed demoralize the officers. Imagine being forced to relocate without a clear plan for your family’s well-being.

“The financial compensation offered might not be sufficient to secure a decent three-bedroom apartment, as some officers have pointed out. This stress can negatively impact their performance and overall job satisfaction.

“Moreover, the stigma associated with being a police officer can make it challenging for them to find landlords willing to rent to them. It’s unacceptable that officers face discrimination simply because of their profession. The action has potential consequences.

“Officers may feel undervalued and unappreciated, leading to decreased motivation and performance. A demoralized police force can compromise the state’s security, as officers may become less effective in maintaining law and order.

“The displacement of officers and their families can have far-reaching social consequences, including strain on relationships and community ties.

“To mitigate these effects, the government should prioritize the following: Ensure that officers have access to safe, affordable, and decent housing options. Review the financial compensation package to ensure it reflects the current market rates.

“Offer counselling and support to officers and their families during this transition. Ultimately, the government must strike a balance between rehabilitation efforts and the welfare of police officers. By addressing these concerns, we can maintain a motivated and effective police force, ensuring the safety and security of Lagos State.”
