The Enugu State Police Command has recorded a major victory in its ongoing crackdown on violent crimes, with a series of operations between July 5 and 16, 2025, leading to the arrest of five kidnapping suspects, the neutralisation of one armed suspect, and the rescue of a kidnapped victim.
The operations also yielded an AK-47 rifle, live ammunition, a Toyota Corolla, and ₦10 million in cash reportedly paid as ransom.
On July 16, operatives from the Okpuje Division, supported by Neighbourhood Watch teams, Forest Guards, and local hunters, responded to a distress call about armed kidnappers in a forest in Okpuje-Ani, Nsukka LGA. A shootout ensued, resulting in the death of one suspect and the recovery of an AK-47 rifle loaded with two live rounds. The remaining suspects fled the scene.
Later the same day, the Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad apprehended 23-year-old Aliyu Adamu at Ugwu-Onyeama on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway. Adamu confessed to multiple kidnappings and claimed he was recruited from Awka by an accomplice who remains at large.
On July 15, two sisters—Juliet and Nancy Chukwu—were arrested by the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad while splitting ₦10 million in ransom money allegedly obtained from a relative they conspired to abduct the day before. The victim was safely rescued, and officers seized the ransom and a Toyota Corolla linked to one of the suspects.
Earlier on July 5, two men from Kogi State—Usman Musa and Musa Zaria—were captured at Okemmou in Udi LGA. Police recovered clothing and a wristwatch tied to victims of a kidnapping the previous day. The victims later identified both suspects.
All arrested individuals will be charged once investigations are finalised. Authorities continue efforts to apprehend remaining accomplices.
Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, praised the bravery and professionalism of the officers involved and reassured the public of the Command’s firm resolve to root out crime and protect all residents of Enugu State.
