PSC Promotes Over 250 Senior Officers, Argungu Pledges Reform Through Mandatory Exams

-

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has sanctioned the promotion of over 250 senior police officers nationwide, marking a major milestone in the Commission’s efforts to uphold meritocracy and professional excellence within the Nigeria Police Force.

Among the promoted officers are 12 Commissioners of Police elevated to the prestigious rank of Assistant Inspectors General (AIG). These include Johnson Oluwole Adenola (CP, Oyo State), Ako Benedict Gabriel (CP, Anti-Fraud), and Ronke Nurat Okunade (Special Fraud Unit, FCID Lagos), among others.

16 Deputy Commissioners upgraded to substantive Commissioners, including Uduak Otu Ita, Charles Ezekwesiri Dike, and Victor Avwerosuo Erivwode.

27 Assistant Commissioners promoted to Deputy Commissioners. Notably, one ACP was absent and did not participate in the exercise. 145 Chief Superintendents of Police moved up to Assistant Commissioners, with specialists among them, such as medical doctors, pharmacists, aircraft engineers, and priests.

29 Superintendents, all technical specialists (including Info-Tech, AFIS, and Works), promoted to Chief Superintendents and Deputy Superintendents (specialists) elevated to Superintendents.

The PSC confirmed that these promotions followed rigorous examinations and interviews, spearheaded by retired DIG Taiwo Lakanu, Chair of the Standing Committee on Police Matters. The recommendations were subsequently ratified in plenary.

DIG Argungu emphasised the permanence of the promotion examination system, calling it essential for aligning Nigeria’s law enforcement practices with global standards. He urged officers to embrace this new culture of performance-based progression or risk being left behind.

PSC Chairman reiterated the Commission’s vision for a resilient and capable 21st-century police force, one capable of combating criminality with professionalism and commitment. He congratulated the newly promoted officers and encouraged them to recommit to national service.
