Six Dead, Nine Injured in Tragic Road Accident on Lekki–Epe Expressway

-

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed that six people lost their lives in a fatal accident on Monday at Ibeju Bus Stop, along the Lekki–Epe Expressway.

The crash, which involved a blue Volvo FL6 truck loaded with wooden planks and a white commercial bus (AKD 336 YD), also left nine others injured.

According to LASTMA, the deceased comprised two adult males, three adult females, and one minor child. The nine survivors—three males and six females—were rescued with the support of other emergency responders and taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Epe, and Hammond Hospital for urgent treatment. The bodies of the dead were deposited at the FMC morgue, pending formal identification by their families.

Four other individuals were said to have escaped the crash unhurt.

LASTMA disclosed that preliminary investigations by security operatives linked the accident to excessive speeding and reckless driving.

General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the bereaved families and condemned the recurring menace of reckless driving on Lagos roads.

“Speed thrills but ultimately kills,” he warned, urging motorists to embrace patience, discipline, and defensive driving—especially during the Ember Months when road traffic crashes are more frequent.

He stressed that accidents are not caused by mystical forces but are often the direct result of human error, poor judgment, and disregard for traffic regulations.

Bakare-Oki also commended the swift intervention of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), and other responders for their prompt evacuation and restoration of order at the accident scene.

“The preservation of life and safety on Lagos roads remains our utmost priority, and we will continue to work with stakeholders to ensure safer highways for all,” he added.
