The Enugu State Police Command has arraigned a 41-year-old social media user, Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, before a Magistrate’s Court in the state over alleged defamatory publication and cyberbullying/stalking against the Secretary to the Enugu State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia.
Ugwuanyi, who operates a Facebook account under the name “Sen Chijikem Ugwuanyi,” was arraigned on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, following investigations by the police into a post made on January 15, 2026.
The post allegedly falsely attributed a statement to the SSG suggesting that some individuals were meant only to be used for winning elections, while others would receive appointments and political benefits. The suspect reportedly attached the photograph of Prof. Onyia to the post.
According to the police, investigations revealed that the publication was defamatory and intended to cyberbully and stalk the SSG. Although the suspect admitted making the Facebook post, he was unable to provide any evidence that the SSG made the alleged statement.
The court consequently ordered that Ugwuanyi be remanded in a Correctional Centre, while the case file was forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, cautioned social media users to exercise restraint and responsibility in their online engagements. He warned against cyberbullying, stalking, and the publication of defamatory content capable of inciting hatred or breaching public peace, stressing that offenders would face the full weight of the law.
The police reiterated their commitment to safeguarding public order and protecting individuals and institutions from cyber-related offences in the state.
