Tinubu, German Chancellor Merz Discuss Security Cooperation, Support for Sahel Surveillance

-

President Bola Tinubu and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have agreed to strengthen cooperation on security and infrastructure development, with a particular focus on addressing instability in the Sahel region.

According to the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the agreement was reached during a telephone conversation between the two leaders on Wednesday afternoon, February 18, 2026.

Securitynewsalert.com heard that during the discussion, Tinubu raised concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the Sahel corridor and called for greater support in intelligence and surveillance operations. He specifically requested the supply of used helicopters to enhance reconnaissance capabilities across the region.

“The Sahel corridor is bad and needs our support. Intelligence support reconnaissance is needed,” the Nigerian leader said.

Both leaders also agreed to deepen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Germany, including collaboration in power, railway development, and skills training, which they noted could also contribute to stability and economic growth.

On energy infrastructure, Tinubu briefed Merz on the ongoing Presidential Power Initiative and indicated that Nigeria would require assistance with power transmission. The German Chancellor said Siemens would be ready to support the effort, while Deutsche Bank could provide financing for the project.

The leaders also discussed cultural cooperation and skill development, with Merz highlighting the importance of the arts and advocating the establishment of a Great Museum of African Arts.

Diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Germany have spanned about 65 years. Merz also noted that his government is awaiting the arrival of Nigeria’s new ambassador to Germany.

The phone call between the two leaders began at 2:01 p.m. and ended around 2:10 p.m.
