Rights Group Sounds Alarm Over Alleged Threat to Peter Obi’s Life

-

Guard Time Information (GTI) Human Rights Activists Nationwide has issued a stinging condemnation following reports of a threat against the life of former presidential candidate, His Excellency Peter Obi, in Edo State.

In a press conference held in the Federal Capital Territory, the non-partisan organisation warned that any attempt to intimidate or harm political leaders represents a direct assault on Nigeria’s democratic foundation.

Flanked by a coalition of legal practitioners and fellow activists, GTI Chairman Mr Bibi Oduku called for the highest levels of law enforcement to intervene immediately.

“We call on the newly appointed Inspector General of Police to immediately deploy intelligence units to thoroughly investigate this alleged threat,” Oduku stated. “Those responsible must be identified and brought to justice without delay. Nigeria’s democracy must not be reduced to a battlefield of intimidation, harassment, or violence.”

The group emphasised that while political rivalry is natural, it must remain within the bounds of civil discourse. GTI stressed that the healthy competition essential for a thriving democracy is currently being overshadowed by personal attacks and hostility. The organisation noted that political parties and their supporters must understand that democracy thrives on issue-based campaigns and respect for opposing views, rather than hostility.

“Political rivalry should never translate into threats to life or acts capable of destabilising our nation,” the group noted in an official statement. “Leaders across party lines must promote tolerance, dialogue, and peaceful engagement in the interest of national unity and development.”

GTI made it clear that they expect the Nigerian Police Force to act with total impartiality, regardless of the political stature of those involved. The group maintained that anyone found guilty must face the full weight of the law to deter future occurrences, asserting that no individual is above the legal framework of the nation.

The activists further urged security agencies to act with the utmost professionalism to reassure Nigerians that their safety and democratic rights remain protected. “Nigeria belongs to all of us,” Oduku concluded. “Let us safeguard it together.” #securitynewsalert.com
