The tragic death of Malam Bashar Sani, a Director at the College of Education, Maru, has once again highlighted the worsening insecurity in Northern Nigeria.
His ordeal, marked by repeated kidnappings and ransom payments, has sparked outrage and grief across social media.
Years ago, armed bandits abducted Sani’s two wives. He paid ₦10 million to secure their release. Months later, his younger brother Hassan was kidnapped, forcing him to pay another ₦3.5 million.
Fearing for his family’s safety, Sani relocated them to a crowded area, where they lived in relative peace for 18 months. But the bandits returned.
This time, they kidnapped Sani himself, along with his wife and daughter. The ransom demand was ₦20 million. He managed to raise ₦7 million, but it was not enough.
After 42 days in captivity, Sani was killed. His wife and daughter were eventually released.
The story, shared widely online, has drawn emotional reactions.
David Marshall Ikechukwu lamented that citizens in the north suffer more directly from terrorism and banditry, yet some Northern elders and politicians fail to admit this fact or condemn the perpetrators strongly.
Aliyu Ameenu described the account as the most poignant story he had heard in a long time, praying for Allah to accept Sani’s martyrdom.
