Nigerian Troops Repel Night Attack in Borno, Kill Over 60 Insurgents

-

The Nigerian Army has said its troops successfully repelled a coordinated night attack by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters in Mallam Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State, killing more than 60 insurgents, including key commanders.

According to the Army, the attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at about 12:50 a.m., when the insurgents advanced on foot from the Duguri general area, supported by multiple armed drones, in an attempt to breach the 68 Battalion’s main defensive position.

“Their movement was swiftly detected by vigilant troops who responded with overwhelming firepower,” the Army said.

It added that in a “well-coordinated operation,” ground troops, working in synergy with supporting air components, engaged the attackers decisively.

“Over 60 terrorist fighters, including some notorious commanders, were neutralised during the encounter,” the statement said.

The Army noted that the intensity of the counterattack forced the remaining insurgents to retreat in disarray toward the Arege general area.

“The intense firefight forced the remaining insurgents into a disorganised retreat,” it added.

Following the encounter, troops have launched follow-up operations to track down fleeing fighters.

“Troops have since commenced exploitation operations to pursue and eliminate the fleeing terrorists, while Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance platforms are being deployed to dominate the adversary’s withdrawal routes and prevent regrouping,” the Army stated.

Reaffirming its commitment to national security, the Army assured citizens of continued efforts to combat terrorism.

“The Nigerian Army remains resolute and committed to sustaining offensive operations against terrorist elements, while reassuring law-abiding citizens of its dedication to safeguarding lives and property across the country,” it said. #Securitynewsalert.com
