Delta Police Denies Allegation of Suspect’s Death in Custody, Warns Against Misinformation

-

The Delta State Police Command has denied allegations circulating online that a suspect died in police custody at the Ekpan Police Station, describing the claim as false, misleading and unfounded.

In a statement issued on Saturday, made available to Securitynewsalert.com, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the allegation was made by one Israel Joe, described as a self-acclaimed activist.

“The Delta State Police Command has taken note of a publication by one Israel Joe alleging that an unnamed suspect died in police custody at Ekpan Police Station. The Command states unequivocally that the allegation is false, misleading, completely unfounded and an attempt to undermine the efforts the Command is making to reduce crime in the state,” Edafe said.

He stressed that at no time did any suspect die in police custody in Ekpan or anywhere in the state, contrary to the claims made in the publication.

Providing clarification on the incident referenced, the police spokesperson explained that it was part of a coordinated raid on criminal hideouts carried out between March 25 and 26, 2026.

According to him, the operation, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, targeted identified criminal black spots in Ughelli and Warri.

“The operation resulted in the arrest of over 270 suspects across Ughelli and Warri, including suspected drug traffickers and wanted cultists. Large quantities of illicit drugs were also recovered during the exercise,” he said.

Edafe noted that all the suspects arrested during the operation were screened, adding that those not found culpable were released, while others remain in custody.

“All suspects arrested were duly screened. Those not found wanting were released, while others are currently in custody in good condition. It is important to reiterate that no casualty was recorded,” he said.

The Command described the spread of the allegation as reckless and capable of misleading the public while undermining confidence in law enforcement agencies.

“The Command views the deliberate spread of such misinformation as reckless and capable of misleading the public, undermining confidence in law enforcement and distracting from ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminal elements,” Edafe stated.

While acknowledging the role of civic engagement, the police warned that individuals using activism or blogging as a cover to spread false narratives against the force would not be tolerated.

“Any individual found publishing or circulating false information against the Police will be investigated, arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” he warned.

The Commissioner of Police in the state also reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property.

“The Command remains resolute and undeterred in its constitutional responsibility to safeguard lives and property and ensure that residents of Delta State continue to live in safety and peace,” Edafe added.

He urged members of the public to disregard the publication and rely only on official police channels for credible information. #Securitynewsalert.com
