AU to Adopt Nigeria’s Safe Schools Model as IGP Disu Hosts Ambassador Jainaba Jagne in Abuja

-

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, hosted Her Excellency Ambassador Jainaba Jagne, Special Envoy for Children Affected by Armed Conflict (CAAC), alongside an international delegation at the Force Headquarters on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.

The high-profile visit marks a pivotal moment as 54 African nations move toward adopting the Nigeria Police Force’s innovative Safe Schools Initiative model.

The diplomatic engagement served as a strategic study tour of the Nigeria Police Force Schools Protection Squad Command and Control Centre, operating under the framework of the global Safe Schools Declaration (SSD).

Reflecting the continental significance of the initiative, the visiting delegation included key representatives from Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, and Ethiopia, alongside officials from the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA) and Save the Children International.

Ambassador Jagne highly commended the Nigeria Police Force for its proactive stance on safeguarding education, noting that Nigeria’s framework has become a blueprint for the rest of the continent.

“Several African countries are looking to understudy and adapt the Nigerian Safe Schools model,” Ambassador Jagne stated during the briefing. “Member states across the African Union have shown strong interest in Nigeria’s initiative as part of broader continental efforts to strengthen the protection of children and educational institutions affected by insecurity and armed conflict.”

In response, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to the full implementation of the Safe Schools Declaration. He emphasised that the policing strategy would continue to evolve to meet contemporary security challenges through deep-rooted collaborations with educational authorities, development partners, and grassroots stakeholders.

“The Force will continue to deploy intelligence-led strategies, patrol operations, rapid response mechanisms, and technology-driven solutions to ensure the safety of schools nationwide,” IGP Disu stated.

The IGP expressed his gratitude to the international delegation for recognising Nigeria’s pioneering efforts in advancing school security and child protection.

He closed the session by reiterating the absolute readiness of the Nigeria Police Force to support collaborative regional initiatives, aiming to export this successful security model to guarantee safe learning environments across the entire African continent.
