Security operatives in Owerri West Local Government Area have arrested a suspected member of the Aiye Confraternity cult group during an initiation ceremony at a bush camp in Umuokomoche, Nekede. Acting on credible intelligence, officers stormed the location where the group, notorious for terrorising the Federal Polytechnic Nekede and surrounding communities, was reportedly conducting the ritual.
The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Police Constable Chiwuiike Victor, was found dressed in a camouflage uniform. During interrogation, he claimed to be serving at the Iho Ikeduru Division.
Items recovered from him included two Beretta pistols with five rounds of live ammunition and a locally made single-barrel pistol, all concealed in a black handbag. Other individuals at the scene fled in disarray as officers advanced.
Authorities confirmed that preliminary investigations are ongoing, with efforts underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects. The police emphasised their commitment to dismantling cult activities and ensuring the safety of residents in Nekede and its environs.
