The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has extended the deadline for submitting memoranda and position papers on the proposed legislation to Friday, August 21, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. WAT.
This is contained in a statement by Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President and Chairman of the Working Group, who said the extension would give stakeholders more time for thorough preparation and well-considered input into the bill.
The proposed legislation seeks to establish the operational, administrative, institutional and funding framework for an effective policing architecture that meets Nigeria’s evolving security needs, while ensuring accountability, professionalism and the protection of citizens’ rights.
Gbajabiamila said the Working Group is committed to a broad consultative process and urged legal practitioners, civil society organisations, security sector professionals, state governments, professional bodies, academics and members of the public to make use of the extended window.
All submissions must be made on or before the new deadline through the official portal, nationalpolicingbill.com.
Key issues under consideration include sustainable funding, command and control structures, recruitment and training standards, operational jurisdiction, inter-agency coordination, accountability mechanisms, and safeguards against political interference.
At the conclusion of its work, the Working Group will present a final, implementation-ready draft of the bill for legislative processing. It thanked stakeholders who have already submitted memoranda and encouraged others to do so before the new deadline.
