NHRC Raises Alarm Over Hate Speech Ahead of Osun Poll, 2027 Elections

-

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed concern over rising cases of hate speech, inflammatory statements, threats of violence and voter intimidation ahead of the Osun State governorship election and the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Tony Ojukwu, called for urgent action to address statements capable of escalating tensions and undermining peaceful participation in the electoral process.

Ojukwu said the Commission had noted divisive remarks linked to the Osun governorship election and urged political actors, religious leaders, supporters, the media and other stakeholders to exercise restraint.

He stressed the need to promote messages of peace, tolerance and democratic participation, while calling on all Nigerians to respect the rights of citizens as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
