Troops Foil Terrorist Abduction in Zamfara, Rescue Nine Civilians

-

Troops of the Joint Task Force North West Operation FANSAN YAMMA (JTF NW OPFY) have successfully thwarted an attempted mass abduction by terrorists in Unguwar Rogo Village, Kaura Namoda Local Government Area, rescuing nine civilians, including an infant.

The incident occurred on 16 August 2026, when troops received a distress call that armed men, believed to be led by suspected kingpin Mallam Shuaibu, had infiltrated the community and attacked travellers along a local route.

According to military sources, preliminary intelligence suggests the attack may have been a reprisal for the recent arrest of suspected collaborators linked to the terrorist network. These suspects were earlier intercepted while attempting to procure motorcycles and Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to support terrorist operations.

Eyewitnesses reported that the terrorists concealed themselves in a millet farm and opened fire on passing vehicles, forcing some drivers off the road. “It was terrifying. They just started shooting at us from the bush,” said one survivor, who asked not to be named.

Troops of Sector 2 responded swiftly to the distress call, engaging the attackers in a decisive firefight. Faced with superior firepower, the terrorists abandoned their mission and fled into the forest.

Following the operation, nine civilians were rescued, including an infant. Two women who sustained gunshot wounds were evacuated for medical treatment and are currently receiving care.

Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, Media Information Officer for the Joint Task Force, emphasised the military’s commitment to protecting civilians: “Operation FANSAN YAMMA remains resolute in its determination to deny terrorists and other criminal elements the freedom to attack innocent citizens. We will continue to sustain pressure on terrorist networks while taking all necessary measures to restore lasting peace and security across the North West region.”

This latest success underscores the ongoing efforts of security forces to counter terrorist threats and safeguard communities in Zamfara and beyond.
