Civil society organisation PROMAD has strongly condemned remarks attributed to the Chairman of Kuje Area Council, Hon. Samuel Shekwolo, in which he reportedly told residents unwilling to support the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections to leave the council.
In a statement issued Tuesday, PROMAD described the comments as “reckless, irresponsible and deeply troubling,” stressing that such rhetoric undermines democratic values and threatens community cohesion.
“Political loyalty is a legitimate part of democratic politics. However, expressing support for a political party must never come at the expense of the rights, safety, and dignity of fellow Nigerians,” said Joseph Akujuobi, Communications Officer for PROMAD.
The group warned that statements suggesting citizens should leave their communities because of their political choices “have no place in a democracy and can create an atmosphere of fear, division and potential violence.”
PROMAD called on Shekwolo to immediately withdraw the statement and issue a public apology to the people of Kuje and Nigerians at large.
“Citizens have the constitutional right to freely choose the political party or candidate they wish to support,” Akujuobi added. “One can demonstrate political loyalty and pledge allegiance to a party without threatening, intimidating or endangering fellow Nigerians.”
The organisation urged political leaders to recognise the influence of their words and avoid incitement, particularly at a time when Nigeria “needs greater political tolerance, peaceful engagement and respect for democratic values.”
PROMAD concluded by stating it awaits a public apology and retraction from the Kuje Area Council Chairman.
