Guard Time Information (GTI) Human Rights Activists Nationwide and the Anambra State Police Command have condemned the alleged brutal abuse of a seven-year-old girl, Oluebube Ofoma, in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The child was reportedly rescued from further harm by security personnel from Ibollo Community, Awada-Obosi, and concerned residents following the alleged abuse.
The incident was reported to the police on the evening of September 13, 2026, after the child was found with severe bodily injuries.
The police subsequently arrested the child’s mother, Mrs Ogechi Ofoma, 32, in connection with the alleged incident.
According to preliminary information made available to the police, the seven-year-old girl was allegedly subjected to severe physical abuse, including injuries reportedly inflicted with a hot knife.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are, however, still being investigated by the police.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has commenced collaboration with the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare as well as GTI Human Rights Activists Nationwide to secure urgent medical attention and other necessary support for the victim.
The police said the collaboration aimed to ensure the child receives appropriate medical treatment, protection, counselling, and welfare support.
The Command also commended the Ibollo Community security personnel and residents for their prompt intervention, which it said helped rescue the child and facilitate immediate police action.
A statement by the Command said, “The safety, welfare and best interests of the child remain paramount, and all necessary steps will be taken to ensure that anyone found culpable faces the full consequences of the law.”
The police further assured the public that the investigation would be conducted professionally and thoroughly, in accordance with the law.
Speaking on the development, Chairman of GTI Human Rights Activists Nationwide, Comrade Bibi Oduku, condemned the alleged abuse and called for justice for the victim.
Oduku said the organisation’s legal team in Anambra State would closely monitor the case and work with relevant authorities to ensure that the rights and welfare of the child were protected.
He said, “This is a disturbing case that requires urgent attention. Every child has the right to live in safety, dignity and freedom from violence and abuse.”
According to him, the alleged incident should serve as a strong reminder that child abuse, torture and all forms of violence against children must not be tolerated in any community.
Oduku added that GTI Human Rights Activists Nationwide would continue to support initiatives aimed at protecting children, promoting human rights and strengthening public awareness of child-rights protection across Nigeria.
He called on parents, guardians, community leaders, security agencies and relevant government institutions to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of child abuse or violence against vulnerable persons to the appropriate authorities.
He said protecting children was a collective responsibility, adding that society must ensure that vulnerable children are protected from all forms of abuse and exploitation.
