Rainbow Watch and Development Centre, a non-governmental organization set up to promote human rights, development, and good governance, has asked the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State, CP Polycarp Emeka Nwonyi, to state the reason for the assault on the Executive Governor of the State.
The group also asked the police to explain how the Rivers State House of Assembly located opposite the State Police Headquarters was burnt down and no one has been arrested in connection with the attack.
The Executive Director, Rainbow Watch and Development Centre, Michael Lenee Gbarale, said: “The recent attack on the Rivers State House of Assembly has left residents in Rivers State and Nigerians as a whole with questions as to the role that the police played in the security breach that led to the destruction of public property.
“It is quite worrisome that the police, who ought to be the custodians of law and order, stood aloof while hoodlums visited destruction on the assembly complex in front of the Police Headquarters in River State.
“We, therefore, urge Commissioner Polycarp Emeka Nwonyi, to come out and tell Nigerians what role the Rivers State Police Command played in the alleged assault on the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalaye Fubura.
“The Commissioner of Police should also explain how thugs were able to invade the Assembly complex without any resistance from security operatives.
It is quite disheartening that nobody has been apprehended in connection with the attack till this moment. We, therefore, call on CP Polycarp Emeka Nwonyi to explain why nobody has been arrested in connection.
“We urge the commissioner to be transparent in his dealings and let the citizens of Rivers State and Nigerians know the role himself and co-police officers played in the recent security breach at the Rivers State House of Assembly and fish out the police officers who assaulted and fire tear gassed the governor of Rivers State.
“We call on the Inspector General of the Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to immediately set up an investigation Panel to unravel the alleged roles played by the police in the assault of the governor and failures of the Rivers State Police Command to protect the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex directly under their supervision.
“We are committed to promoting good governance, and we believe that one of the essential components of good governance is the ability of leaders to be accountable to the citizens they serve.”
