The recovery operation of the missing victims of the ill-fated boat sailing from Mile 2 to Ibeshe has led to the recovery of a total of 17 more bodies today.
According to the Acting Coordinator of the Lagos Territorial office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, some bodies were recovered last night and earlier today.
Farinloye said: “However, 17 bodies have been recovered so far from the Lagos Lagoon after the boat mishap and recovery continues. It has been found out that illegal operators carrying services after the end of official hours allowed, which is 7:00 PM, permitted by the Inland Waterway operation rules are being violated. It was revealed that the regulatory bodies have tried to stamp out illegal operations of small boat operators who hardly use life jackets after official hours, but they do not heed to efforts being made to stop them. It was also observed that wooding boats, which are not permitted to be used as passenger boats, were being used at these odd hours by the illegal operators, thereby putting the lives of unsuspecting passengers at risk.”
