The Executive Director of Esther Child Rights Foundation, Ms Esther Ekwem, a human rights activist, has narrated how her team rescued and rushed a young girl to the hospital after her aunt’s boyfriend allegedly stabbed her for refusing his sexual advances.
According to Ekwem, the incident occurred on Friday, November 14, when a fruit seller brought the injured girl to the Foundation’s office.
“There was blood all over her body. When we asked what happened, she told us her aunt’s boyfriend stabbed her,” Ekwem recounted.
The Foundation immediately took the girl to the police station, where a medical report was obtained before she was transferred to Okiki Hospital.
Doctors admitted her and treated multiple injuries, including a deep wound on her forehead.
After stabilising her condition, the girl revealed that her aunt’s boyfriend had been sexually harassing her, touching her inappropriately and threatening to kill her when she resisted.
She said that after she confided in her aunt, the man became enraged and attacked her.
Efforts to contact the girl’s mother proved difficult. The girl only had her mother’s phone number, and when she reached out, the mother reportedly delayed for hours before arriving at the hospital.
Witnesses described the victim’s mother as initially abusive toward those assisting her daughter.
However, she later calmed down and disclosed that the girl had previously lived in Liberia and had a case file in Ikeja.
The girl remained hospitalised until 17th November, when she was discharged.
Meanwhile, attempts to arrest the aunt’s boyfriend have so far been unsuccessful, as he has gone into hiding.
Ekwem emphasised that the Foundation was committed to pursuing justice for the lady and ensuring her safety.
