The Nigerian Army has announced the arrest of 18 individuals allegedly involved in supplying logistics to Boko Haram terrorists in the North-East, raising fresh concerns over civilian participation in insurgent support networks.
In a statement posted on its official handle, the Army said troops of Operation HADIN KAI intercepted the suspects while they were moving from Gubio towards the Gudumbali axis, reportedly to deliver supplies to terrorist elements.
According to the Army, “Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have arrested 18 individuals linked to the supply of logistics to Boko Haram terrorists, highlighting a disturbing pattern of civilian involvement in support networks that sustain insurgent activities in the North East.”
The statement added that preliminary investigations and confessions from the suspects suggested economic hardship as a key factor driving their involvement.
“Initial confessions suggest that the individuals were drawn into the illicit trade largely due to personal economic challenges, reflecting how criminal groups continue to exploit vulnerable persons for their operations,” the Army said.
The Army issued a strong warning to Nigerians against aiding terrorist groups in any form, stressing that such actions carry severe consequences.
“The Nigerian Army strongly warns all citizens against any form of collaboration with terrorist groups. Providing logistics, intelligence, or assistance to such elements remains a serious offence, with grave consequences for national security and the safety of innocent lives,” it stated.
It also called on communities to play a more active role in the fight against insurgency by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activities.
“The public is reminded that the fight against terrorism requires collective commitment. Citizens are therefore encouraged to promptly report suspicious activities and resist any inducement to aid criminal elements,” the statement read.
The Army further emphasised the importance of socio-economic interventions in reducing vulnerability among residents in conflict-affected areas.
“It is equally important to recognise the need for sustained socio-economic support and community-focused initiatives that can strengthen resilience and reduce vulnerabilities within affected areas,” it added.
Reaffirming its commitment to national security, the Army said it would continue to work with communities and relevant stakeholders to ensure lasting peace.
“The Nigerian Army remains steadfast in its mandate to safeguard all communities and protect law-abiding citizens. Lasting peace and stability, however, can only be achieved through a unified approach,” the statement concluded. #Securitynewsalert.com
