35 Years, One Paycheck: The Tragedy of Betrayed Service

On July 28, 2025, a respected Deputy Commissioner of Police, Frances Erhabor —known for his unwavering stance against corruption and his decorated service under the Buhari administration—made a heart-wrenching revelation.

After 35 years in the Nigerian Police Force, having risen to a senior rank, dedicating his life to the law, and serving with distinction, the nation rewarded him with a lump sum of just $5,488.01. That’s his gratuity and pension—for three and a half decades of loyalty, risk, and sacrifice.

This is not just an insult to one man—it is a scathing indictment of Nigeria’s broken and dehumanising pension system. A system that strips dignity from its veterans, and with it, the moral fabric of the service. When law enforcement officers see such a future, what hope is there for integrity? When a nation fails to honour its most disciplined officers, what motivation remains for those still in uniform?

It is no wonder, then, that corruption thrives in the ranks. The state has inadvertently weaponised poverty and insecurity of tenure. Officers now treat power as a survival tool, and the badge as a gateway to personal insurance. The rot in the Nigeria Police Force is not merely a matter of individual failings; it is structurally induced—fuelled by institutional neglect and a system that punishes honesty and valorises survivalist impunity.

DCP Erhabor’s story is the silent story of thousands—honest officers who end up betrayed, broken, and discarded. If the government is sincere about reforming the police and fighting corruption, it must start by addressing welfare and retirement security. A country that cannot honour its heroes cannot lay claim to justice.

We must demand reform of the contributory pension scheme. We must press for a complete overhaul of police welfare. And we must insist that public service, especially in high-risk roles like policing, be treated with the dignity it deserves.

Until then, every new recruit is simply marching towards a future of disillusionment.
