Rule of Law And Accountability Advocacy Center (RULAAC) is of the view that the issue of looting during protests is a complex one that cannot be fully addressed in isolation without considering the underlying factors that led to it.
It is a fact that corruption and embezzlement of public funds by politicians in public offices have resulted in deprivation, hardship, and poverty among many citizens in Nigeria. This has contributed to the anger and frustration expressed by the protesters.
The looting that occurred during the protests cannot be condoned as it is a criminal act that violates the rights of others, destroys property, and undermines the goals of peaceful protests. However, the government and security agencies should also recognize that the root causes of looting are poverty, hunger, and lack of opportunities.
Addressing these issues requires a comprehensive approach that involves good governance, accountability, and provision of basic amenities such as education, healthcare, and employment.
It is hypocritical for the government and politicians to condemn looting by hungry people while engaging in mindless looting and embezzlement of public funds themselves.
The government and lawmakers should lead by example and fulfil their mandate of serving the people instead of enriching themselves at the expense of the citizens.
It is their responsibility to ensure that basic needs are met, and the citizens are not forced to resort to desperate measures such as looting due to hardship and deprivation.
