IGP Receives ECONEC Delegation to Strengthen Electoral Security Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, welcomed a high-powered delegation from the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC) at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, as part of a strategic dialogue aimed at fortifying electoral integrity ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Led by Mrs. Davidetta Browne Lansanah, Chairperson of Liberia’s National Elections Commission, the delegation featured distinguished electoral experts including Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairman of Ghana’s Electoral Commission; Mr. Chinedu Chinedu, ECONEC’s Senior Programme Officer; Prof. Bolade Eyinla, Chief Technical Adviser to INEC; and other key partners.

The meeting focused on reviewing recommendations from the 2023 general elections report and exploring implementation strategies to boost Nigeria’s electoral framework. Mrs. Lansanah applauded the IGP for his commitment to electoral security, noting the Nigeria Police Force’s pivotal role in ensuring peaceful and credible elections across the region.

The IGP reaffirmed the Force’s unwavering commitment to impartiality and professionalism, highlighting its role in:  Monitoring campaigns and resolving potential conflicts,  Securing electoral materials and providing personnel deployment and Investigating offences, maintaining peace, and ensuring accountability

He also emphasised the importance of continued collaboration between security agencies and electoral commissions, citing positive endorsements from international observers during previous polls.

The meeting concluded with a pledge to uphold democratic values and deepen regional cooperation in election management.
