The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has charged Border Patrol Commanders across the country to step up their efforts in protecting Nigeria’s borders, describing them as the nation’s first line of defence against external threats.
Egbetokun gave the charge during a conference with the Commanders at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he highlighted the critical role of border security in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty, preventing bloodshed, and protecting Nigeria’s identity.
The IGP acknowledged the vast and complex nature of Nigeria’s land borders and maritime corridors, particularly those linking the country to the Gulf of Guinea. He commended the relentless efforts of the Force Border Patrol unit in addressing the evolving challenges posed by cross-border crimes.
“The Nigeria Police Force cannot tackle 21st-century crimes with 20th-century tools,” he stated, urging commanders to embrace technology such as surveillance systems, drones, biometric scanners, and real-time data analysis to stay ahead of criminal elements.
Egbetokun also underscored the importance of intelligence-led policing, community trust, and inter-agency collaboration as the foundation for effective border management. While praising officers for their sacrifices in the line of duty, he reiterated that the welfare of police personnel remains a priority under his leadership.
He tasked the commanders to remain proactive in preventing criminal activities along Nigeria’s borders, assuring the public of the Force’s unwavering commitment to securing the nation, protecting its citizens, and defending its territorial integrity.
