Enugu Police Assure Security for Senatorial Bye-Election, Announce Movement Restrictions

-

The Enugu State Police Command has assured residents of adequate security ahead of the Enugu North Senatorial District bye-election scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe.

According to the police, restrictions will be placed on human and vehicular movement from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on election day across the six local government areas that make up the senatorial district. The affected councils are Igbo-Etiti, Igbo Eze North, Igbo Eze South, Nsukka, Udenu, and Uzo-Uwani.

The Command stated that the restriction is aimed at ensuring a peaceful, orderly, and credible electoral process. However, electoral officials and individuals engaged in verifiable essential duties will be exempted from the directive.

To strengthen security during the election, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved the deployment of additional personnel from Zone 13 Headquarters, the Anambra State Police Command, Police College Oji River, and the Police Detective College, Enugu.

The reinforcement is expected to complement personnel already deployed from other security agencies operating in the state.

CP Giwa called on political parties, candidates, their supporters, and voters to conduct themselves peacefully and in accordance with the law before, during, and after the election.

He warned that electoral offences such as thuggery, ballot-box snatching, vote-buying, and any form of violence would not be tolerated, stressing that offenders would be prosecuted.

The Commissioner also urged residents and eligible voters in the senatorial district to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons, activities, and electoral malpractices to the nearest police station.

The Enugu North Senatorial bye-election is being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fill the vacant seat representing the district in the National Assembly. #Securitynewsalert.com
