The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to expedite action and ensure justice and accountability in the tragic killing of Police Inspector Shedrack Amechi by an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ebonyi State.
According to the Ebonyi State Police Command’s authorities, the matter has already been transferred to the Force Headquarters, Abuja. RULAAC insists that this transfer must not result in unnecessary delays or a cover-up, but rather a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation that delivers justice for the late officer and his family.
Inspector Amechi was shot and killed on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at Amaeze, Ishiagu, Ivo Local Government Area, while on duty to effect the arrest of a suspect being shielded by NSCDC operatives. Reports indicate that the NSCDC operatives confronted the police team and, acting on alleged instructions from a superior officer, obstructed the arrest. In the ensuing confrontation, an NSCDC operative discharged his rifle, fatally wounding Inspector Amechi.
In a statement signed by RULAAC’s Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma, the organization condemned the avoidable inter-agency hostility and misuse of firearms, stressing that such incidents undermine public confidence in law enforcement and threaten national security.
RULAAC emphasized that Inspector Amechi’s death is not just a personal tragedy but also an institutional matter. His dependents have been left in a vulnerable position, having lost their breadwinner, and the police institution must not abandon them.
The petition addressed to the IGP reads in part: Ensure a prompt, impartial, and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Inspector Amechi’s death, including the actions of NSCDC operatives and their superiors.
Guarantee accountability by bringing all those responsible – whether directly or through command responsibility – to justice, as a deterrent against future inter-agency conflicts and impunity.
Provide adequate redress and compensation for the Amechi family, recognising the hardship created by the loss of their breadwinner.
Offer institutional assurance to serving police officers that if they lose their lives in the line of duty, their families will not be abandoned. This is vital for sustaining morale and commitment within the force.
RULAAC noted that while steps such as an autopsy and meetings between the police command, NSCDC, and the family have been proposed or held, these must be followed by concrete actions that establish the truth, ensure accountability, and provide justice.
“RULAAC, acting in its mandate of promoting accountability and the rule of law in Nigeria, will continue to follow up on this matter and expects regular updates from the Force Headquarters on the progress of the investigation. We trust in the IGP’s leadership to ensure that justice is done and seen to be done in this case,” the statement concluded.
