Businessman Accused of Duping Church Member ₦30m

The Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, arraigned businessman Christopher Elendu Enyinnwa before Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe of the Special Offences Court, Ikeja, Lagos, for allegedly defrauding a fellow church member of ₦30.14 million in a failed slippers importation deal.

Enyinnwa faced a four-count charge bordering on fraudulent conversion and obtaining money under false pretences. He was accused of collecting the funds from petitioner Chidebere Love Okafor under the guise of supplying slippers from China.

One of the charges read: “Christopher Elendu Enyinwa sometime in August 2024, at Lagos within the Ikeja Judicial Division, fraudulently converted for your own use the sum of Two Million Naira (₦2,000,000), property of Chidebere Love Okafor.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty.

Prosecution counsel Fanen Anum told the court that the EFCC was ready for trial and had witnesses present. Defence counsel K.C. Atuenyi sought an adjournment, arguing he had only prepared for the arraignment. Justice Abike-Fadipe overruled the request and ordered the prosecution to proceed.

The first witness, Okafor, testified that she knew Enyinnwa from church and trusted him to help her import slippers. “He is my church member. I knew him in church. He told me he buys goods, and I approached him to buy slippers in China for me,” she said.

She narrated how she paid ₦2 million initially, followed by ₦11.9 million and later ₦15 million, all into the defendant’s Access Bank account. According to her, Enyinnwa claimed he had shipped goods, including clothes, but nothing arrived.

“The total amount is ₦30,140,000. Up till now, I have not seen the goods and the money,” Okafor told the court.

During cross-examination, defence counsel requested another date to question the witness. The prosecution urged the court to remand the defendant.

Justice Abike-Fadipe adjourned the matter to November 26, December 16 and 17, 2026, for continuation of the trial and ordered Enyinnwa’s remand in a Correctional facility.
