Sen. Ted Cruz Applauds President Trump’s Designation of Nigeria as Country of Particular Concern

-

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has expressed strong support for President Donald Trump’s recent decision to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), citing ongoing religious persecution and violence against Christians in the region.

In a statement released following the announcement, Sen. Cruz said he was “deeply gratified” by the move, which he described as a “critical step” toward holding Nigerian officials accountable for enabling an environment of religious violence.

“I have fought for years to counter the slaughter and persecution of Christians in Nigeria,” Cruz stated. “This year, I introduced legislation that will lock in the designation made today. My legislation implements additional steps, including targeting those who implement blasphemy and sharia laws in Nigeria.”

Cruz emphasised his commitment to working with the Trump administration and fellow lawmakers to advance his bill and ensure the implementation of measures aimed at curbing religious persecution. He praised President Trump’s leadership, calling the decision “a great one.”

Earlier this year, Sen. Cruz introduced legislation in the Senate to formally designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern. The bill also proposes sanctions against Nigerian officials who are complicit in Islamist jihadist violence and the enforcement of blasphemy laws.

This designation by the U.S. government is expected to increase pressure on Nigerian authorities to address human rights violations and protect religious minorities.
