Youngsters in Police Custody for Fabricating False Kidnap Story in Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested five young people for allegedly fabricating and circulating a false story about the kidnapping of secondary school students in Oron Local Government Area of the state.

State Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, disclosed this on Thursday while briefing newsmen and youth leaders from the 31 Local Government Areas. He described the suspects’ actions as reckless and capable of causing fear and panic among residents of the area and beyond.

Azare said: “Five suspects who fabricated and circulated a false kidnapping incident involving students of Oron Secondary School have been arrested and were charged to court this morning. Their actions were reckless, dangerous, and capable of inciting panic and undermining public confidence.”

He urged youth leaders to promote truth, responsible use of social media, and efforts to counter false narratives that could threaten public order.

Emphasising the need for stronger collaboration with Divisional Police Officers, the Commissioner called on youths to support early detection of threats and help ensure the swift resolution of emerging security issues.

He also advised youths to prioritise dialogue rather than confrontation in their dealings with contractors and investors operating within their communities.

“I urge you to prioritise dialogue over confrontation, especially in engagements with investors, contractors, and development partners. Peaceful dialogue promotes development and fosters trust, while confrontational approaches undermine progress and tarnish community reputation,” he said.

Azare assured that the Police Command would continue to work closely with youths across the state to tackle insecurity and promote peace.
