The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has demanded urgent clarification from the commander of Operation Udogachi over reports that men earlier arrested by the group’s operatives were released by the Anambra State Police Command and subsequently ordered rearrested.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma, the rights organisation said it had received information that the suspects were freed by the Anambra State Police Command, after which the commander allegedly directed that they be rearrested and taken to Lion Building, the headquarters of Operation Udogachi.
RULAAC asked the commander to confirm whether the information is accurate and to explain the grounds for any planned rearrest.
The organisation noted that one man has already been reported dead in connection with the incident, a development it said makes the safety of those involved a matter of urgent concern.
“We urge you to ensure that no person is subjected to violence, torture, unlawful detention or any other abuse by operatives under your command,” the group said.
RULAAC stressed that any allegations against the men must be handled through lawful investigation and due process.
The group said it was following developments closely and expected the commander to take all necessary steps to prevent further loss of life and ensure accountability.
