Abducted St. Mary’s Catholic School Pupils, Teachers Regain Freedom in Niger State

-

The remaining students and teachers abducted from St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State, have regained their freedom, security sources have confirmed.

A security official familiar with the rescue operation told Premium Times that the latest release accounts for all the victims taken during the attack on the school on November 21.

The Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication and spokesperson to President Bola Tinubu, Mr. Sunday Dare, also confirmed the development, announcing that a total of 130 pupils had been freed.

“Another 130 abducted Niger State pupils released. None left in captivity,” Mr. Dare wrote on Sunday in a brief post on X.

The victims were abducted when gunmen stormed the boarding school, sparking widespread public outrage and reigniting concerns over the safety of educational institutions across the country.

The incident had drawn condemnation from civil society groups and education stakeholders, who have repeatedly called on authorities to strengthen security around schools to prevent future attacks.
