A joint operation between the Enugu State Police Command and local vigilantes successfully thwarted a kidnapping attempt along the Ngene-Ukwu axis of the Adani–Nsukka Road early Sunday morning.
The encounter, which occurred at approximately 6:00 a.m. on January 18, 2026, resulted in the death of one suspect, while several others escaped into the forest with gunshot wounds.
According to a statement released on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the suspects emerged from a nearby bush to intercept a vehicle plying the route. However, they were met by a combined team of operatives from the Adani Division and the Neighbourhood Watch Group.
“Upon sighting the operatives, the suspects opened fire, but the operatives responded with superior firepower,” Ndukwe stated. “This led to the neutralisation of one of the kidnappers, while the others fled into the surrounding forest.”
Following the intense exchange of gunfire, police recovered one AK-47 rifle loaded with two rounds of live ammunition from the scene.
The Command has launched a manhunt to track down the fleeing gang members, who are believed to be nursing serious injuries.
The police spokesperson issued a specific appeal to the local community and medical professionals to remain vigilant: “Members of the public, particularly residents and healthcare providers in the area, are urged to promptly report anyone presenting with gunshot wounds or suspicious injuries to the nearest Police Station or security formation.”
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, praised the bravery of the joint team for their swift response in protecting the commuters.
“The Commissioner reassures the public of the unwavering commitment of the Police and other security agencies to rid Enugu State of violent criminal elements,” the statement added, emphasising that efforts have been intensified to dismantle the entire criminal network operating in the area.
