Nigerian Army, Taraba Govt Forge ‘Unbreakable Alliance’ Against Insecurity — COAS

-

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has declared an “unbreakable alliance” between the Nigerian Army and the Taraba State Government as part of a renewed, all-out push against terrorism and other forms of insecurity.

Lieutenant General Shaibu made the declaration on Tuesday while receiving the Executive Governor of Taraba State, Colonel Agbu Kefas (rtd), alongside federal lawmakers and members of the Executive Council of the International Institute for African Ispense Security and Governance, during a courtesy visit to the Army Headquarters in Abuja.

The Army chief reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to its constitutional mandate of supporting civil authorities in maintaining peace and security across the country. He described Taraba State as strategically important within Nigeria’s security architecture, citing its terrain and unique security dynamics.

Commending Governor Kefas for what he described as decisive leadership and effective coordination with security agencies, the COAS said the Taraba State Government’s support, particularly the donation of land and the provision of operational equipment, has been a critical force multiplier.

According to him, the interventions have “significantly enhanced the tempo, reach and effectiveness of military operations in the region.”

Emphasising the need for sustained civil-military collaboration, Lieutenant General Shaibu noted that lasting peace could only be achieved through a united front. In this regard, he appealed for continued partnership from the state government, specifically requesting support in providing stable electricity to the 20 Model Battalion in Sarti and the 23 Battalion.

He explained that an improved power supply would directly boost operational efficiency, combat readiness and troop welfare.

The COAS also called for intensified public sensitisation across Taraba State, urging residents to actively support security efforts by providing timely and credible intelligence.

“Community cooperation remains a decisive weapon in defeating terrorists and other criminal elements,” he said.

In his response, Governor Kefas described the visit as a demonstration of Taraba State’s unwavering solidarity with the Nigerian Army. He congratulated Lieutenant General Shaibu on his appointment as Chief of Army Staff and praised the professionalism, resilience and sacrifices of Army personnel.

The governor noted that the sustained presence of troops in the state had led to “visible and measurable improvements” in the security situation.

Governor Kefas further commended the level of inter-agency cooperation among security outfits operating in Taraba State, while highlighting areas that require reinforced military presence.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to deepening support for the Nigerian Army, including assistance with accommodation for deployed troops.

Both parties, he said, remained resolute in sustaining a united, “steel-hard” front against insecurity.
