In a major milestone for regional stability, the Theatre Command of Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) successfully facilitated the repatriation of over a hundred Nigerian households from the Republic of Cameroon on January 27, 2026.
The returnees, many of whom had lived in exile for over 11 years following the height of the insurgency, crossed the border at Kirawa before being escorted to Pulka town in Gwoza Local Government Area. The operation was described by military officials as a “safe, dignified, and orderly” return made possible by the sustained kinetic operations that have restored a sense of security to the region.
“Operation HADIN KAI remains steadfast in its resolve to secure communities, protect civilians, and support initiatives that restore hope and rebuild lives,” stated Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer for the Headquarters Joint Task Force. “Our troops continue to maintain high morale and operational readiness to ensure these displaced Nigerians return safely to their ancestral homes.”
The exercise, which began in Minawawu, Cameroon, involved a coordinated effort between Sector 1 troops, the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and local vigilante groups. Upon reaching Nigerian soil at Maraban Kirawa, the delegation and returnees were received by Brigadier General Nasiru Abdullahi, Commander of the 26 Task Force Brigade, who oversaw their transit to a designated reception centre.
Representing Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, Engineer Wakilbe led a high-level Borno State Government delegation to witness the emotional homecoming. He was joined by local leaders and representatives from international bodies, including the UNHCR and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
“The environment is now enabling for socio-economic activities to thrive once again,” a military spokesperson noted during the reception. “This movement reflects the strong civil-military cooperation that now defines our stabilisation efforts in the North East.”
At the Pulka reception centre, the Borno State Government provided immediate relief packages, including financial assistance, mattresses, and wrappers. Complementing these efforts, the Federal Government supplied essential food items, while the UNHCR provided cash grants to help families manage temporary accommodation challenges.
To ensure the long-term well-being of the returnees, military medical personnel and Gwoza Local Government health officials are currently conducting comprehensive medical screenings and routine immunisations for children.
While the Theatre Command described the current security environment as “calm but fluid,” the successful mission serves as a blueprint for future repatriations.
The government delegation is expected to return to the Republic of Cameroon shortly to facilitate the return of additional batches of Nigerian citizens eager to rejoin their communities.
