The Nigerian Army has concluded the 2026 Lieutenant to Captain Practical Promotion Examinations (LCPPE), describing the exercise as a major step in strengthening leadership capacity among junior officers.
SECURITYNEWSALERT.COM reports that the examination, hosted by the 81 Division Nigerian Army, took place in Abeokuta, where candidates were tested across academic, physical and tactical areas as part of the requirements for advancement in rank.
Speaking before the announcement of results, the Commander of the Training and Doctrine Command, Nigerian Army, Major General Peter Malla, described the examination as a defining moment in the careers of participating officers.
“This examination represents not merely an assessment of knowledge and competence, but a test of character, discipline and leadership potentials,” Malla said.
He urged candidates to apply lessons learned during the exercise as they prepare to take on greater operational responsibilities. The commander also praised the discipline and professionalism displayed by participants, noting that the examination complied strictly with the Army’s Charter for Promotion Examinations.
Malla further expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for providing support and resources that ensured the smooth conduct of the exercise. He also commended the host division for its administrative coordination and hospitality.
In his farewell remarks, the General Officer Commanding the division, Major General Adebayo Babalola, described the promotion examination as one of the most rigorous and essential stages in an officer’s professional development.
“To the candidates, this transitional requirement for elevation from Lieutenant to Captain is not merely a desirable stage; it is a step into the backbone of company-level leadership,” Babalola stated.
He encouraged officers to reflect on their professional growth and carry the resilience gained during the exercise back to their various units.
The two-week examination covered eight core subjects, including Tactics, Map Reading, Communications, Administration in the Field, Driving and Maintenance, Skill at Arms, French Language and Physical Fitness. Military authorities described the LCPPE 2026 as a comprehensive assessment designed to enhance leadership, operational readiness and tactical competence among future company commanders.
The development forms part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Army to improve professional standards, strengthen command structures and ensure effective field leadership across its formations.
