Lagos State Government Trails TikTok User Following Viral Sexual Assault Allegation

-

The Lagos State Government has launched an active search for a young woman, Mirabel, who recently took to TikTok to share a harrowing account of being sexually assaulted within her residence.

Securitynewsalert.com reports that the video, which has gained significant traction and sparked public outcry across social media platforms, prompted an official response from the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) on Wednesday.

In an official statement, securitynewsalert.com found on its X-Space handle, the DSVA confirmed it is tracking the case and working to provide the survivor with medical, legal, and psychological support.

However, the agency noted that they are still in the process of establishing direct contact with the victim to determine the exact location of the incident.

“The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has taken note of the multiple tags and public concerns regarding a video currently circulating on social media,” the Agency stated. “We are actively making efforts to reach the survivor to offer immediate support and appropriate intervention and ascertain the location.”

The DSVA further emphasised the state’s rigid stance on gender-based violence, reiterating that such acts will not go unpunished.

“The Lagos State Government maintains a zero-tolerance stance against all forms of Domestic and Sexual Violence. Sexual Assault is a crime, and every survivor deserves protection, care, support, and justice.”

This incident follows a growing trend in Nigeria where survivors of various crimes, particularly sexual violence, turn to platforms like TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram to share their stories.

Often, these survivors cite a fear of being dismissed by traditional authorities or a desire for immediate public witnesses as their motivation for “going viral.”

While these videos often lead to swift government reactions, they also present challenges for agencies like the DSVA, which must verify the authenticity of the claims and ensure the survivor’s safety before legal proceedings can begin.

The DSVA has appealed to the public for credible information that could help them reach the young woman safely. They assured the public that all reports are handled with the utmost confidentiality.
