Nigerians Divided Over Alleged Rape Survivor’s Suicide Attempt in Lagos

-

A harrowing account of sexual assault in Lagos State and a subsequent suicide attempt has ignited a fierce debate across social media, pitting messages of deep empathy against sharp scepticism regarding the details of the ordeal.

Securitynewsalert.com can report that the controversy began when a young woman, identified by the handle @Teeniiola, shared a distressing update about a rape survivor, popularly known on TikTok as Mirabel, who claimed to have ingested “Sniper”, a potent agricultural insecticide, following a traumatic sexual assault in her home.

Mirabel, in her latest video post,  described feeling “broken” and “mentally exhausted” after allegedly being raped in her own home by a total stranger.

“My chest is burning, I am so tired, so broken,” she said, adding that a friend had rushed her to the hospital to save her life.

Securitynewsalert.com observed that the post immediately triggered a wave of support from observers who condemned the act of violence and called for urgent institutional intervention.

Many users expressed heartbreak over the victim’s desperation, citing her story as a grim reflection of the trauma survivors face when the justice system fails to provide a sense of security.

“The shame belongs to the stranger who broke in, not the woman who lived through it,” noted one commentator, King Dave, who urged the survivor to see her life as more valuable than the ordeal. Others called on the Lagos State Government and NGOs to provide legal and psychological aid, fearing that reporting the matter to the police might result in the case being “carpeted” or the victim being blamed.

However, a significant portion of the online community has raised questions regarding the timeline and medical feasibility of the survivor’s recovery. Critics pointed out that “Sniper” is a highly toxic organophosphate that typically causes severe respiratory failure, loss of muscle coordination, and prolonged hospitalisation.

“You drank Sniper yesterday and still get strength to do video today?” one user questioned, suggesting the “script” did not align with medical reality. Others urged the public to “confirm before moving with emotions,” suggesting that a formal police report and forensic evidence should be the priority before launching public fundraising efforts.

Amidst the arguments over the authenticity of the suicide attempt, the underlying issue of safety and accountability remains a focal point. Supporters of the young woman argue that trauma manifests in different ways and that focusing on “medical loopholes” shifts the focus away from the alleged predator.

“Imagine not even feeling safe in your own home. That kind of pain can break anyone,” wrote another user, Isip, who emphasised that the fact she is still alive should be seen as a sign of strength, regardless of the scepticism.

As the discussion continues to trend, many are calling for a formal investigation to ensure that if a crime was committed, the perpetrator, reportedly a man with “money and connections”, is held accountable.
