The Lagos State Police Command has ordered an investigation into a viral video circulating online that allegedly shows officials of the Lagos State Task Force engaging in misconduct involving motorists.
In a statement shared on social media, seen by Securitynewsalert.com, the Command confirmed that the video had come to its attention and that the matter was being taken seriously.
The statement emanated because of a viral video, shared by an online media platform, that shows members of a task force forcing a driver to position his vehicle on a one-way lane to frame a traffic offence and extort money.
The statement reads: “The attention of the Lagos State Police Command has been drawn to the video currently circulating online,” the Command stated. “The Commissioner of Police has ordered an immediate investigation into the matter.”
According to the statement, authorities expressed appreciation to members of the public who drew attention to the incident and assured that appropriate action would follow the outcome of the probe.
“The Command appreciates members of the public for bringing this to our attention and assures that appropriate action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation,” the statement added.
Reacting to the growing public concern over the video, the Force’s New Media Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police, Aliyu Giwa, stated that the matter was already under careful review and that all relevant facts were being thoroughly examined.
“Over the past few hours, my phone has not stopped receiving messages, inquiries and concerns all centred around one thing, the video currently circulating online involving the ‘Lagos State Task Force’ headed by CSP Akerele,” he said.
Giwa assured Nigerians that the police would conduct a thorough review of the allegations.
“I can confirm that the matter is under careful review. Every detail is being examined. Every fact is being ascertained. Nothing is being swept aside, and nothing is being treated lightly,” he said.
He stressed that the process aligns with the accountability standards set by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
“That is the standard the Inspector General of Police has set for this Force, and it is a standard that will be upheld in this case and in every case that follows,” he added.
Giwa further stated that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to accountability and transparency.
“The Nigeria Police Force is not an institution that runs from accountability. Under this leadership, accountability is not a threat; it is a commitment,” he said.
He also acknowledged the reactions of Nigerians who expressed concern after watching the video.
“To every Nigerian who sent a message, raised a concern, or simply watched that video and felt unsettled, your reaction matters. Your vigilance is not noise. It is the voice of a public that expects better, deserves better, and under this leadership will get better,” he said.
The Command urged the public to allow the review process to run its course and refrain from spreading unverified information.
“We ask only one thing in return: allow the review process to run its full course. Resist the pull of unverified information and trust that the facts, when they are fully established, will be communicated through the Lagos State Police Command’s official platform, transparently and without delay,” Giwa said. #Securitynewsalert.com
