Mixed reactions have followed reports alleging that more than 100 civilians were killed in a recent airstrike by the Nigerian Air Force, with critics condemning the incident as another case of mistaken targeting, while supporters insist the operation struck terrorist elements.
The controversy erupted after accounts emerged suggesting that the strike, reportedly carried out during an operation against insurgents, may have hit a populated area, including a market.
While some observers and media reports claim civilian casualties, others have defended the military, arguing that those present in the area were linked to terrorist activities.
On social media, reactions have been sharply divided.
A user, @kufrekoffi, questioned the quality of surveillance used in the operation, saying, “Can’t you see how blurry the view is? The technology is getting so badly outdated… we need more of these results, perhaps with a much clearer screen so we can give a better analysis.”
Others voiced strong support for the military. @Ishola_adey01 wrote, “More to come, please don’t listen to negative opinions… please do your work more.” Similarly, @realness000 stated, “Well done, Nigeria force. The terrorist apologist [is] doing everything to change the narrative… We need more airstrikes on the nuisance.”
Some commentators argued that those killed should not be classified as civilians. @KawuGarba said, “If the Jilli village is abandoned as claimed… then anybody found there… is either a logistics supplier, trader, or the terrorists. I don’t know why the media is reporting those killed as civilians.”
However, critics expressed outrage, accusing the military of repeated errors. @sweetsixtien wrote, “Accidental killing of civilians every time! This will be at least the seventh or eighth time… This is so careless & irresponsible!”
Echoing similar concerns, @SavvyRinu asked, “Did you bomb civilians or not?”
Questions were also raised about transparency and the timing of military communication. @OjoAzeezAyinde queried, “Why is it that you guys are always quick to post about victories after suffering a major defeat?… I’m starting to doubt your posts and information.” Meanwhile, @Olabode_2911 urged authorities to improve information flow, stating that the military “should provide earlier information or live coverage immediately after the successful missions.”
Others focused on the broader implications of air operations in civilian areas. @snnfeed noted, “Ground-Based Response is Standard & Most Appropriate in crowded places… where one miscalculation = dozens of innocent deaths, turning a tactical win into a strategic disaster.”
Despite the criticism, many Nigerians praised the armed forces’ efforts against insurgency. @billad24 wrote, “Thank you, Nigerian Army, for this intelligence-planned operation… You have neutralised another terrorist camp and logistics [hub].”
Another supporter, @Jameselijah07, added, “If you are not a terrorism enabler… when you see men with guns… in a war zone is to run.”
The incident has also reignited debate over the accuracy of intelligence, the risks of aerial bombardment in conflict zones, and the recurring issue of civilian casualties in Nigeria’s counter-insurgency operations. However, there has been no definitive independent confirmation of the casualty figures, while military authorities have yet to provide a detailed breakdown addressing the allegations.
