The Delta State Police Command has reacted strongly to a viral video showing officers of ‘C’ Division, Asaba, extorting money from a motorist inside the station using a POS machine.
The incident, which occurred on January 13, 2026, has been described by the command as “embarrassing, unprofessional, and conduct unbecoming of police officers.”
In a statement issued on Thursday, Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the act, stressing that “no citizen deserves to be treated in such a manner by the police. Their act is inexcusable and unpardonable.”
The CP aligned with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who has expressly prohibited extortion and the use of POS machines or electronic payment platforms within police formations.
“No officer is authorised to demand or receive money from any member of the public under any guise,” Oyeniyi emphasised.
The officers involved, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, are currently facing an orderly room trial. The Commissioner assured that “upon the conclusion of the disciplinary process, the outcome will be made public.”
Reiterating his zero-tolerance stance, Oyeniyi warned: “Extortion and abuse of office will not be tolerated under my watch. Officers are expected to carry out their duties professionally and treat members of the public with respect.” He added that the disciplinary measures would serve as a deterrent to others.
The CP also expressed appreciation to members of the public who brought the misconduct to the command’s attention. “We encourage citizens to continue to report any case of police misconduct through the Complaint Response Unit on 09155570008 and 09011112311,” he said.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, signed the statement, reaffirming the command’s commitment to discipline, accountability, and building public trust.
