Delta Police Launch Probe After Viral Video Shows Woman Allegedly Whipped by Officers

-

The Delta State Police Command has launched a formal investigation into a viral video depicting the alleged assault of a woman by its officers, who reportedly subjected her to more than forty strokes of a cane.

The video, which has sparked widespread outrage on X and other social media platforms, features the victim narrating the details of the ordeal. In a swift response to the public outcry, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, ordered an immediate and thorough probe into the claims to verify the circumstances and identify those responsible.

“The Command unequivocally condemns any form of assault, brutality, or abuse of citizens,” a spokesperson for the command stated. “Such conduct is inconsistent with the ethics, standards, and core values of the Nigeria Police Force.”

Preliminary investigative steps are already underway, with the matter being referred to a specialised unit for discreet handling. Officials confirmed that efforts are being intensified to bring any personnel implicated in the incident to account.

The Commissioner emphasised that his administration holds a zero-tolerance policy regarding the violation of human rights. “Any officer found culpable will be dealt with decisively in accordance with the provisions of the Police Act and other extant regulations,” he said, adding that professionalism and discipline remain non-negotiable under his leadership.

In an effort to expedite the inquiry, the command has reached out to both the victim and the activists involved in highlighting the case. “We urge the victim and the activist to please visit the command and provide all necessary information that will help to identify the officer alleged and also aid the ongoing investigation,” the statement read.

To ensure the victim’s safety, the Commissioner has offered full institutional support, promising confidentiality and protection throughout the process. The public is encouraged to assist the inquiry by providing eyewitness accounts or additional video evidence through the Complaint Response Unit.
