Enugu Police Launch New Crime-Fighting Unit, Pledge Respect for Human Rights

-

The Enugu State Police Command has announced plans to formally launch its Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), a specialised team created to intensify the fight against violent crimes across the state.

The initiative follows the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, who emphasised the need for intelligence-driven operations in tackling armed robbery, kidnapping, and related offences.

Speaking on the development, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said: “The VCRU is designed to investigate, respond to, and suppress violent crimes while operating strictly within constitutional provisions, the Nigeria Police Act 2020, and international human rights standards. It is meant to serve as a bridge of trust between the Police and the public.”

The former Crack Tactical Squad Base at Golf Estate, Enugu, along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway, has been designated as the operational headquarters of the Unit. CSP Henry Imo has been appointed as the Unit Commander, while ASP Godwins Ebuka Ebenezer will serve as the State Media Liaison Officer. In line with the Inspector-General’s directive, personnel assigned to the Unit have undergone intensive training in human rights, social intelligence, and emotional intelligence to ensure professionalism in their dealings with citizens. A Complaint Response Desk has also been set up, with 08039382015 provided for members of the public to report misconduct.

Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa,  charged operatives to remain guided by the Unit’s core mandates and standard operating procedures.

He reassured residents of the Command’s determination to combat violent crimes, stating: “We are unwavering in our commitment to protect lives and property. We ask for the continued support and cooperation of the public as we strengthen our strategies against violent crime.”

The formal unveiling of the VCRU by the Inspector-General of Police is expected soon, marking a new phase in the Command’s efforts to secure Enugu State.
