Troops of the Headquarters 63 Brigade, operating under the South South Joint Task Force “Operation Delta Safe,” successfully neutralised a potential security threat in Delta State on Monday, recovering a significant cache of illegal firearms and apprehending two suspects.
The swift intervention took place in the Ogidigben Community, located within the Warri South West Local Government Area. The operation was launched immediately following reports of sporadic gunfire that had caused panic among residents.
According to Captain Iliyasu Bawa-Rijau, the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 63 Brigade, the tactical response was fueled by “credible intelligence” regarding criminal activity in the area.
Upon arrival and subsequent search, the military personnel confiscated four AK-47 rifles, six magazines, and 106 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition. Additionally, the troops recovered two knives, ten machetes, and four pairs of rain boots.
Brigadier General Moronfolu Abdulmoshood Shonibare, Commander of the 63 Brigade, commended the personnel for their resilience and quick thinking. In a statement issued following the raid, the General emphasised that the military would not allow lawlessness to take root in the region.
“The Brigade remains unwavering in our commitment to denying criminal elements any freedom of action,” Brigadier General Shonibare stated. He further issued a stern warning to those operating outside the law, saying, “Any individuals or groups harbouring arms or engaging in criminal activities must have a rethink, as efforts would be intensified to track them down.”
The Commander also charged the troops to sustain their current operational tempo to ensure continued safety for the civilian population.
The two suspects arrested during the raid are currently in military custody. Authorities confirmed that they are undergoing further investigation to determine the source of the weaponry and their involvement in recent disturbances in the Warri South West axis.
