Many of us use gas cylinders regularly, yet we have limited knowledge about their different types and proper placement. This lack of awareness can contribute to accidents and explosions, especially when cylinders are improperly stored.
LPG or cooking gas cylinders are commonly available in 3kg, 6kg, 12.5kg, and 50kg sizes. LPG is heavier than air, so leaked gas can settle at floor level. Cylinders should be kept upright on stable ground in a well-ventilated area, away from heat and ignition sources, with the shut-off valve easily accessible.
Oxygen, acetylene, and CO₂ cylinders are mainly used for medical, welding, and industrial purposes and should only be handled and stored according to appropriate safety guidelines.
A safety-conscious individual should never keep a gas cylinder in a bedroom, cupboard, or other confined space.
