RULAAC Demands Justice for Slain Kano Police Officer, Raises Concern Over Lack of Arrests

-

The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has expressed concern over the killing of a police officer in Kano State and criticised what it described as a lack of urgency and transparency in efforts to bring those responsible to justice.

In a statement issued on May 24, 2026, RULAAC Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma, called for immediate action over the death of DSP Sani Isah of Hotoro Division, who was reportedly shot dead on May 20 while attempting to disperse a clash involving rival thugs in Kano.

According to media reports cited by the organisation, DSP Isah, who was only three weeks away from retirement after more than three decades of service in the Nigeria Police Force, was allegedly shot by a thug armed with a dane gun during the operation. He was rushed to the hospital but later died from his injuries.

RULAAC said it was troubled not only by the officer’s death but also by what it described as the apparent absence of visible progress in the investigation.

“As of the time the reports were published, there had been no widely publicised announcement of arrests, no detailed briefing on investigative efforts, and no strong public assurance that the perpetrators would be brought to justice,” the statement said.

The organisation argued that the situation raises broader concerns about accountability and public confidence in law enforcement institutions.

“This silence is troubling and reinforces growing concerns about selective outrage and selective accountability in Nigeria. Justice must not depend on whether an incident trends on social media or attracts viral public attention,” Nwanguma said.

RULAAC noted that the late officer died while carrying out his official duties of maintaining public order and protecting lives and property, adding that his family had now lost a husband, father and breadwinner just days before his retirement.

The group called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Kano State Commissioner of Police to provide updates on the investigation, ensure the arrest and prosecution of those responsible, provide adequate welfare and support for the officer’s family, and address what it described as the growing problem of violent thuggery and weapons proliferation in parts of Kano State.

“The continued normalisation of violence against both citizens and law enforcement officers undermines public safety, weakens confidence in state institutions, and emboldens criminal elements,” the statement added.
