Police operatives in Ogun State have neutralised two suspected kidnappers and recovered an AK-47 rifle and other exhibits during a follow-up operation linked to the abduction of the Prince of Okun Owa, Prince Idris.
The Ogun State Police Command said the operation followed sustained intelligence-led efforts that led to the safe rescue of the traditional prince, who was kidnapped from his residence in Okun Owa on June 30, 2026.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the abductors stormed the prince’s residence at about 7:30 p.m. and whisked him away, prompting the immediate deployment of the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit and other tactical teams on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni.
The police said sustained intelligence gathering and coordinated tactical pressure forced the kidnappers to release the victim unharmed on July 3.
Following the victim’s release, operatives intensified efforts to apprehend the suspects. Acting on credible intelligence, they raided the Agoro/Imodi axis, where the suspected kidnappers reportedly opened fire on the advancing police team.
The police said the operatives returned fire, resulting in the death of two suspected kidnappers, while other members of the gang escaped with gunshot wounds.
Items recovered from the scene included an AK-47 rifle with an empty magazine, two mobile phones, a bag suspected to have been used for collecting ransom, and other exhibits believed to be connected to the kidnapping operation.
The bodies of the deceased suspects have been deposited in a government morgue for autopsy, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing gang members and recover additional weapons and exhibits.
Commending the officers involved in the operation, Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni praised the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and supporting tactical teams for their professionalism and bravery.
He reiterated the Command’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks operating across the state and urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to assist security agencies in combating crime.
The police also encouraged members of the public to report suspicious persons and activities through the state’s emergency and security communication channels.
