NRC Report Attributes Tragic Warri–Itakpe Train Derailment to Wheel Defect, Braking Factors

-

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has released its preliminary findings into the fatal June 8 derailment of the Warri–Itakpe Train Service, identifying potential mechanical failures and braking issues as major factors behind the disaster.

The derailment occurred near the Goodluck Jonathan Railway Station at Owa-Oyibu in Delta State. The train, carrying 482 passengers and crew, suffered a catastrophic derailment that affected five coaches, a locomotive, and a power car. The incident claimed four lives—three adults and one child—and left 64 people injured.

According to the NRC’s initial report, investigators are focusing on mechanical anomalies that developed while the train was in transit.

“The preliminary investigation points to the possible sudden development of a bogie and wheel defect while the train was en route as a potential cause of the derailment,” the report stated.

The findings also noted operational factors during the emergency, adding that “the manner in which the brakes were applied may have contributed to the severity of the incident.”

The NRC confirmed that infrastructure integrity was not a factor in the crash. The Corporation verified that track points remained intact with no evidence of vandalism or sabotage at the scene. However, officials emphasised that these findings remain provisional while an independent investigation by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) continues.

In response to the tragedy, the NRC outlined key safety recommendations, including mandatory increases in rolling-stock inspections, revamped emergency preparedness protocols, comprehensive staff retraining, and sustained funding for modernisation across the national rail network.

NRC Managing Director Kayode Opeifa offered sympathies to those impacted while promising systemic improvements.

“The Corporation expresses its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and reaffirms our commitment to improving railway safety and restoring public confidence,” Opeifa said, while commending stakeholders and emergency responders for their support.

NRC technical teams have restored the damaged section of the track, and the affected locomotives are currently undergoing complete reconditioning. However, the Corporation stressed that the resumption of the Warri–Itakpe passenger service will strictly depend on the completion and approval of detailed safety audits.
